Shankhachur Lahiri


      Shankhachur Lahiri comes from a family with a strong tradition of Indian Classical Music and has fully devoted his life to Music. Son of the visionary sitarist and Guru Shri Rabindranath Lahiri (disciple of Ustad Dabir Khan), he grew up in an environment imbued with the fragrance of Hindustani music. As a child, he received intensive training in both vocal and tabla from his father and went on to graduate with a Sangeet Visharad in both subjects. He later took advanced talim in tabla from Pt. Sandeep Dev in Kolkata. Currently Shankh, as he is lovingly known in the fraternity, is devoted senior disciple of world-renowned tabla maestro Pandit Nayan Ghosh

     Shankh has gained a reputation as a very creative and innovative concert performer in both classical and Experimental World music genres. He has accompanied and toured with many reputed and front ranking artists such as Pt. Jasraj, Ustad Shujaat khan, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Arati Ankalikar, Pt.Nayan Ghosh (sitar), Pt.Mukul Shivputra (vocal), Pornima Choudhury(vocal), Dr. Shobha Joshi (vocal), Shri Rakesh Chaurasia (flute), Ustad Saeed Zafar Khan (sitar) ,Shri Rattan Mohan Sharma (vocal), Tulika Ghosh (vocal), and many others. He is a regular performer with his elder brother Pulak Lahiri (sitar), and his sister, a young talented vocal exponent Sangeeta Lahiri.

    Shankh has performed at major festivals all over the India such as the Pannalal Ghosh Birthday Celebration at Sangit Mahabharati in Mumbai, Shruti Festival in Mumbai, Sangeet Research Academy (SRA) at NCPA in Mumbai, Geethsagar 2004 in Kerala, Gangubai Hungle Foundation at Dharwar, National Festival of Music & Dance 2005 at Kottayam, SPICMACAY lecture demonstrations and concerts tour all over Northern India, also he did his successful abroad concert tour in Middle East in Dubai , Learn Quest Festival in Boston (USA), Hindu cultural center in Albany (USA), Swaradhana organized The New Jeneration Concert in Florida 2011, India study center opening ceremony concert in KENT University, Cleveland 2011, Chhandayan (New York), Tampa Bay Dance, Raga live Festival and Music Festival and many others.

      In the field of World Fusion music, Shankh has performed with many reputed musicians from abroad. His performances at the Chicago Jazz Festival (USA), Tropical Heatwave Festival, Gasparilla Music Festival, East Meets West 'MUSIC MASALA' concert, Bullfrog - Mumbai and Lights on Tampa Festival many more. Met with great critical acclaim. Currently he is actively working with Florida based WORLD FUSION BAND 'WAHH'  as a composer and performer. 

     Yet with all of his forays into experimental music, Shankh remains firmly rooted in tradition. He draws his greatest inspiration from the classical music legends of past and present. Ustad Ahmedjan Thirakwa, Ustad Amir Hussain Khan, Pandit Anokhelal Mishra, Ustad Amir Khan, Ustad Vilayet khan, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Pt. Mukul Shivputra, Ustad Rashid Khan and his respected Guruji, Pandit Nayan Ghosh, all hold a primary place in his heart and serve as a guide for him in his musical endeavors.

    Shankh has held a key role from its very inception for Shruti School of Music ( - Mumbai and Shruti Foundation, tampa Florida . Both the organizations established as  non for profit, which is quickly becoming recognized as one of the reputed promoters and propagators of Indian Classical Music in India and USA.  Shankh was a prominent faculty member and respected teacher for many years with the Pandit Jasraj School of Music Foundation in Tampa, Florida (USA). Shankh currently continues to share his knowledge with many eager students in his  Music School in Tampa SHRUTI School of Music.
